D-Backs’ Offense Struggles In Loss To The Cubs
The Arizona Diamondbacks are keeping pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, but they will enter their game against the Cubs on Thursday off a tough 2-1 loss to those same Cubbies. The game was 1-0 until Arizona Tied it in the top of the 7th. The Cubs then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 8th and held on for the win. It was a very tough loss for the D-Backs to swallow, but thanks to the Dodgers losing on the same day, they are still just a half a game out of first in the division. Arizona had just five hits in the loss and scored their lone run on a homer by AJ Pollock. Robbie Ray had a strong outing as he allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out six in 7.0 innings of work, but his offense let him down and he was saddled with a no-decision. Taking the loss was T.J. McFarland and he is now 2-2 with a 1.78 ERA on the year. The Diamondbacks have averaged 4.20 rpg and have allowed 3.75 rpg on the road so far.

Taking the hill for the Diamondbacks will be Zack Greinke and he has gone 11-5 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 21 starts on the year, including 6-4 with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 10 starts on the road. In his career, he has gone 77-70 with a 3.72 ERA in 217 games (196 starts) on the road and 25-23 with a 3.45 ERA in 73 games (63 starts) during the month of July, while against the Padres he has gone 10-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 20 starts, including 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA in 11 starts here at Petco Park.

On the mound, they have been very solid so far as they come in ranked 5th in the league in ERA at 3.61, while also ranking 8th in WHIP at 1.23 and 10th is K’s with 900. The Padres have also not won back-to-back games in their last 35 games.  Freddy Galvis hot his 5th homer of the year in the loss, while Austin Hedges also hit his 5th of the year. Clayton Richard had a rough start as he allowed six ERs on five hits and two walks while striking out just one in 5.0 innings of work to fall to 7-10 with a 5.05 ERA on the year.
